Forgotten Sindhi Script – Waranki

By

The search for any indigenous Brahmi based scripts often starts & terminates at Hat-Wanaki. This despite that fact that Sindhu-Saraswati civilization of Sindh had the very nucleus of not only Indus valley civilization but of Vedic civilization as well.  Arabic Writer Al- Burni in his writings on ancient Sindh did mentioned three  scripts to be in vogue before the Arab invasion of Sindh  viz. Malwari, Hinduvi & Ardhanagri. Yet confusion remains. One of the reasons of such confusion had been lack of historical evidences to counter verify the usage of Brahmi based scripts in Sindh. In 1958 a team led by researchers led by F A Khan did find some sort of evidences of the scripts used in ancient  Sindh city of Bhanbhor which was approximately 40 Miles from the Sindh’s capital Karachi. Unfortunately the volume of such evidence is too little to construct the entire script as it existed in ancient Sindh.  One of the main reasons needless to say had been the massive Arab Invasion of Sindh which swept all traces of Hindu culture. What Arabs destroyed never got rebuild.

In the context of Writing Systems in Sindh one can conveniently divide Sindh’s History in two parts. Viz. One before the Arab invasion and the other that followed after the massive upheaval that changed Sindh in all possible manner – culturally, socially and politically. Needless to say while almost all the North and west Indian Scripts could easily be traced to its brahmi , Sindhi never been that much fortunate. A close analysis revels more than once reason for loss of Historical loss of archeological evidence viz.

A)    Post Arab Invasion there was an virtual slaughter of Sindhi Hindu Sadhus- the custodian of Learning in ancient India  – Such void had a disastrous effect on Sindh which never could be reversed.

B)     Post Arab invention every attempt was made to wipe out Hindu civilization & Culture including language from Sindh

C)    In Kashmir & Punjab where even Hindus regained power from Muslims, the contemporary rulers reintroduced Brahmi based scripts but in Sindh Post Dahir Hindus never to could settle themselves and even those who did settle themselves after accepting Islam never bothered to reintroduce Sindhi Language in Sindh leave apart the Brahmni scripts

D)   Ever since the massive Arab invasion Hindus were in a bitter struggle of existence. A struggle that continues even today in post-partition Sindh

‘A Complaint’

Poetry by Hassan Dars

Translated from Sindhi by Mohammed Hanif and Gobind Menghwar.

You do not have the time
To feel with your own hands
The sharp edge of history’s sword
You curse love itself,
You mock it
You do not even know
The love they give you
You don’t know the assassins’ intent
You haven’t met their new generations
Their daggers’ thirst
Unquenchable
I swear by the martyrs of Makli
Time is the lost ring of an unknown soldier
That can fit around the finger of any thief
Now you are walking into the circus with them!
Our rope is broken midway
We have fallen into the open jaws of crocodiles.
While we lie here buried deep in our defeat
You are in the midst of their victory feast!
I wish you’d remember your land
I wish you’d remember your country
Your street

Meet the first Robotic Waiter of Pakistan

This restaurant in Multan is providing Robotic Waiter service to its customers

A pizza place in Multan, Pizza.com, is all set to provide robotic waiter service to its customers. The amazing thing is that this robot in question and all of its underlying technology is completely made from the ground up in Pakistan.

1-7jucwjzrcpb1uqxqeb1tuw-790x527

The face behind this technology
The main force behind this whole operation is Syed Usama Aziz, an electrical engineering graduate from NUST. He is the son of restaurant’s owner and has a keen interest in the field of Robotics.

Source of motivation
Usama enrolled in Electrical Engineering department of NUST in 2011 and graduated in 2015. He wanted to study further and explore the field of Robotics by going abroad. His father, the owner of Pizza.com, encouraged him to stay in Pakistan and prove his mettle here.

Upon failing to convince his parents on going abroad for further studies, he decided to follow his passion right here in Pakistan. In order to improve his fathers’ hotel, he struck the notion that whole serving process should be automated to increase efficiency by many folds.

But when he realized that the cost of importing an automatic serving machine from other countries would set him back millions of rupees, he decided to develop one in Pakistan from scratch.

Meet the first Robotic Waiter of Pakistan
After 8 months of hard work, and investment of around 0.4 million Pakistani Rupees (4 lakh Rupees/ around 4 thousand dollars), Pakistan’s first robotic waiter is finally ready to be put to work. Usama is currently beta testing the robot in Multan branch of Pizza.com.

India raises Balochistan, Sindh at UNHRC

By Prasun Sonwalkar, Hindustan Times, London

India has responded to Pakistan’s allegations of rights violations in Jammu and Kashmir at the ongoing session of the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva by highlighting alleged atrocities in the Pakistani provinces of Balochistan, Sindh and Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa.

The two countries clashed at the UNHRC session on Wednesday evening, with India’s permanent representative, Ajit Kumar, saying the “monster” of terrorist groups created by Pakistan is now “devouring its own creator”.

Under India’s “right to reply” after a statement by Pakistan law minister Zahid Hamid, Alok Jha, counsellor in the Indian mission, said Islamabad’s “trust in the methods of terror” was so deep it did not hesitate from using it against its own people.

Sindhi turns out to be second language of Pakistan

Sindhi 2Sindhi remains the second-most widely spoken language in Pakistan, according to MoveHub, a website for people looking to move abroad.

To facilitate people thinking of moving abroad, the website has come up with a map of the world where the names of countries are replaced with their ‘second languages’. While in most cases this shows the effects of colonialism and cultural imperialism, in the case of Pakistan, it reflects post-independence policymaking.

Sindhi is a regional language spoken which is not widely spoken outside of Sindh province, somewhat similar to Punjabi – the first language – which is mostly used in Punjab province.

Incidentally, Pakistan is one of the few countries where the official language is not the first or even the second language. The official language is Urdu.

Pakistan’s regional languages face looming extinction

An Indo-Aryan language, Sindhi is spoken in both India and Pakistan, with some 75 million native speakers around the world. It is the official language of Sindh province of Pakistan and is recognised by India as one of its scheduled languages.

International Conference on Moenjodaro and Indus Valley Civilisation’

LARKANO: Archaeologists from the Unites States, United Kingdom, France, Spain, Japan and Italy attending the three-day ‘International Conference on Moenjodaro and Indus Valley Civilisation’ at the ancient site read out their research papers on the second day on Friday.

The papers focused on technical aspects dealing with the discoveries made and research carried out hitherto, measures undertaken so far to protect and preserve the site for posterity, mid-term plans for the site’s preservation, promotion of tourism, the Indus script discovered so far, seals’ carving techniques etc.

Dr Ayumu Konasukawa, an archaeologist from Japan, presented his paper on ‘Chronological change and continuity of seal carving techniques from the early Harappan to the Harappan periods in the Ghaggar basin’. According to his research, the data for analyses comprises fired steatite seals discovered at Kunal, Banawali and Farmana. Through scanning electron microscope and 3D analysis, it has become evident that the seals found in the basin during the said periods are characterised in various carving techniques. Although the seals have a lot of difference in terms of manufacturing technique and design, such as the motif of the surface, they also have commonality as regards a part of carving techniques.

A new narrative for a complex age: It’s Time for New Economic Thinking Based on the Best Science Available, Not Ideology

By Eric Beinhocker

If 2008 was the year of the financial crash, 2016 was the year of the political crash. In that year we witnessed the collapse of the last of the four major economic-political ideologies that dominated the 20th century: nationalism; Keynesian Pragmatism; socialism; and neoliberalism. In the 1970s and 80s the centre right in many countries abandoned Keynesianism and adopted neoliberalism. In the 1980s and 90s the centre left followed, largely abandoning democratic socialism and adopting a softer version of neoliberalism.

The Indus signs have been under constant analysis and study. These have been subjected to various examinations where these were identified as primary and composite signs.

Asko Parpola has made a continuing contribution to research on the Indus writing system. He collected and critically edited the Indus signs as he attempted at structural analysis. His objectives were to find out the number of graphemes, and the word length. His search for primary signs and identifying composite signs resulted in preparation of the sign list of the Indus script, with principle graphic variants, each with one reference.

The Indus signs have been largely used as drawing images in computational analysis and studies. Present effort is to create the Indus signs in Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG) based font for installing in computers.

National fund for Mohenjodaro has developed this font for installing on computers and embedding on websites by researchers and users around the world. This font is developed by Mr. Shabir Kumbhar, engineering / embedded and mapping by Mr. Amar Fayaz Buriro with the consultation of Dr. Kaleemullah Lashari.

Indus Script font is available to be downloaded for further studies, computational exercises and statistical analysis, free of charge; the only encumbrance is that user acknowledge our website.

@ where Marx went wrong ?

By Iqbal Latif

Marx was the best thinker but he thought that the world will not move forward and has frozen that will continue with extreme suppression of labour. Marx & Engels in the Communist Manifesto in 1848 said ‘the proletarians have nothing to lose but their chains. They have a world to win. Working Men of All Countries, Unite! ‘

Marx could not believe that workers in a century plus will become partners in firms like MSFT INTEL Google and FB and 🍎!

Marx could not imagine mental cerebral capacity of man will create a trillions of $ worth universally 24/7 connected economy that will be managed not by 18 hours a work day dungeons labour force but intelligent servers.

Marx never thought that Apple and like of those will make huge extraordinary complexes to get the best out of workers not wretched conditions.

Marx thought that entrepreneur will extract the last drop out of the workers body. He could not imagine a capitalist state agreeing on 36 hours work week!

Marx had no idea of an economy based on service! ‘Employees Holidays’ are a huge industry, that he never thought or could imagine. An employee or a worker today enjoys the same holidays as his boss in a fair capitalist society.

Marx never thought that accumulated wealth by largest billionaires will be transferred freely without a war to the next generation of mankind not to their children. Gates Buffet Zuckerberg phenomenon. This was not envisaged in his Das Kalital!

There was no concept in Das Kapital of a capitalist state taking care of the basic education health and shelter of every child from cradle to the grave!

Marx thought that the grain of ‘Historical Exploitation of man’ is genetically homed in and if will continue. That actually did not happen, the world thinking changed 180 degree.

The only place where such exploitation continues are the Marxist countries like North Korea and Cuba! Freedom of action is curtailed. Deng freed the Chinese nation from exploitation of the state in the name of Great Leap Forward.

I think forget about complicated jargon what destroyed Marxism was benevolence of the state ‘ the kind of state education system, the NHS and the housing policies of capitalist states plus a punitive taxation structure where multiplication of unbridled wealth is checked and not allowed to be transferred without hefty cuts.

It was Deng who destroyed Marxism more than anyone else next was Yeltsin!! These issues highlighted above cannot be answered by Das Kapital – it is like the Genesis that went time barred with emergence of Hubble and LHC Couldron. There was no room left for 6/6000 days creation by a super creator.

Indian author Sudheendra Kulkarni calls for India-Pakistan-Bangladesh confederation to resolve issues

Indian author moots confederation to settle Kashmir issue

NEW DELHI: Indian Vice President Hamid Ansari on Wednesday released a book that calls for a confederation of India, Pakistan and Bangladesh but without undoing the partition as the only way to address poverty and resolve the Kashmir dispute.

“Regional cooperation with a focus on human security problems, on movement of people and on trade without unreasonable restrictions” was the need of the hour, Mr Ansari said at a function in Mumbai, apparently agreeing with the book’s argument.

“The common traits in cultural traditions and historical narratives need to be transmitted to younger generation through conscious promotion rather than prevention of cultural exchanges, films, and other cultural activities,” Mr Ansari said in his appeal to the governments and civil societies in India, Pakistan and Bangladesh.

Mr Ansari made these comments while releasing August Voices, a new book by Indian peace activist Sudheendra Kulkarni, which calls for an India-Pakistan-Bangladesh confederation.

“Common action is easier on areas of convergence than of divergence,” Mr Ansari said. For convergence, there is a need to move “beyond the traditional paradigm of conventional security into those of human security and human wrong. Both are ignored by the governments and societies in our region. There is a crying need for the recognition and implementation of both. Only then would we develop the perception and capacity for correctives.”

Pakistan’s Big Threat Isn’t Terrorism—It’s Climate Change

To Pakistan, terrorists seem a more formidable enemy than rising temperatures and sea levels. But what happens when climate change upends Karachi, the country’s economic backbone?

BY SUALIHA NAZAR

For decades, Pakistan has struggled to manage urgent crises, ranging from infrastructure woes to terrorism. While its policies focus on short-term conventional threats, a potentially devastating danger lurks in the shadows: climate change. As the impact of global warming continues to grow, the political and economic instability it brings will threaten Pakistan’s security. The Pakistani government must prioritize its response to climate change in order to mitigate environmental threats and prevent future calamities.
