United States and Canada should unite ASAP – Diane Francis

Merger of the Century by Diane Francis: Review

The argument for Canada and the U.S. to unite

Diane Francis’s Merger of the Century, HarperCollins, 403 pages, $32.99.

By: Don Tapscott

If the creation of the European Union is evidence, trade agreements, common markets and economic unions can lead to political unions. So it’s not so preposterous that 20 years after the signing of the North American Free Trade Agreement, someone has finally crafted a serious proposal for the political integration of Canada and the United States.

Best-selling author, writer and pundit (and dual citizen of both countries) Diane Francis argues that the United States and Canada should unite ASAP. She sets out the economic benefits of joining forces, how the deal could be fairly structured, and the political hurdles to overcome.

SANA – A forum for every North-American Sindhi

khalidhashmaniby: Khalid Hashmani

As the Sindhi Association of North America (SANA) nears the completion of its 29th year, every North-American Sindhi, even those who at times have no faith in SANA, must admire its durability and its success in several areas. Along the way, some North-American Sindhis may have felt disappointed, but the mere fact that SANA has been holding its legendary annual conventions for twenty-nine continuous years is a miracle. I reckon there are not many North-American organizations of communities that migrated from the vast region of South Asia that can claim such an accomplishment. Those who have observed SANA since inception would credit its longevity to its well thought-out and simple objectives that have stood the tests and trials of nearly three decades and its ability to minimize major fractures due to ideological and other differences among its members. The six objectives that are largely the same as they were agreed in the first SANA Charter document in 1984 charter are as follows:

To create a sense of brotherhood, cooperation and cohesion amongst Sindhis living in North America.

To endeavor for, and defend the historic national rights, including human rights, and rights of self- determination of Sindhi people within their existing national territory.

SANA is a secular voice of North American Sindhis

President of Sindhi Association of North America (SANA) Jamil Daudi said in his statement; SANA is a secular organization to its core, in the true sense of the word, meaning that it doesn’t believe in the discrimination on the basis of one’s faith or lack of faith whatever the case may be. SANA, like Sindh, belongs to all the peace loving Sindhis no matter what religion or faith they believe in.

He said, I would request all the members of SANA and all the SANA-list members to please follow the spirit of Sindh, i.e., tolerance for each other and for all the fellow members of the organization, and all human beings at large. Let’s join hands to do good, as Sindhi, we believe in making the world a safer place to live in & spread love & peace.

Pakistan doesn’t have any better friend than me, Ram Jethmalani says

Huston, TX: Ram Jethmalani, the former Indian Union minister, the former member of Rajya Sabha and president of the Supreme Court of India, said that I am the representative of the scattered Sindhi people living around the globe. He was speaking in Houston at the 26th annual convention of the Sindhi Association of North America as a Chief Guest. He said that I was forcefully separated from my motherland during partition of subcontinent. I have experienced living as a refugee but I’ve never thought about revenge. In the refugee camp, I had thought that if India and Pakistan will not become friends, then they will both be destroyed and with that belief I have lived in India. He said that I want to claim that Pakistan doesn’t have any better friend then me in India. He said, I respect all religions and every person has a right to live his life according to his religious beliefs. He said, “Please have courage to speak the truth. We are going through a very delicate situation today if our youngsters do not learn and pick up the courage to speak the truth. The democracy will never survive and the freedom will disappear from our hands.” His emphasis was on the need and importance of education. He said “no society can survive without education.” and “Democracy without education is hypocrisy without limitations.” He said there are two signs of Sindhi sabhita (Sindhi culture).  “One is internal which is to serve the people and the other one is language. He said the essence of sindhyat is secularism”.

A documentary on Sindh and Sindhi Life

A Sindhi attorney in Los Angeles is currently working on a small documentary through the Sindhi Association of Southern California which is to be presented at a Sindhi Sammelan/ conference this July in Los Angeles, and potentially posted online. She is interested in using pictures of Sindhi singers, Sindhi art, and Sindhi historical monuments.

The documentary will be an interview of 5-10 elder Sindhis who left Sindh as refugees during the 1947 partition. The idea is to document their journey and recognize their ability to re build their lives and retain their culture. This movie will be made only to document their lives for younger generations to have a glimpse of how Sindhi culture survives in their lives. (this is strictly a non profit- educational and cultural video).

CJ reinstatement: congratulations to Sindhi community in North America

by Aziz Narejo, TX, USA
An epic struggle by lawyers, civil society activists and some political parties has finally succeeded and the government has been forced to reinstate the judges deposed by military dictator on 3rd November, 2007. SANA has been steadfastly supporting the reinstatement of the Chief Justice of Pakistan, Mr. Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Choudhry and other judges. Our members have organized, supported and participated in several rallies in USA and Canada for the cause and we have been writing on various forums on the subject.
I congratulate SANA members on the reinstatement of the Chief Justice and other judges.
