Drought takes six more lives in Tharparkar, toll rises to 67

MITHI: Six more children died from various diseases in different hospitals of Tharparkar district of Sindh in past 24 hours, raising the drought death toll to 67 since the start of this month.

A newborn died in Mithi Civil Hospital, five more minors lost lives in remote village of Diplo and Chhachhro talukas of district .

Meanwhile, scores of children were brought to the hospitals in Mithi, Diplo, Nagarparkar, Islamkot, Chhachhro and other towns of the district for treatment.

Parents and relatives of patients also complained about lack of healthcare facilities and attitude of doctors and other paramedical staff.

Sindh govt responsible for Thar situation: Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui

SINDH – KARACHI: (Dunya News) – Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) Rabita Committee Deputy Convener Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui has held Sindh government responsible for Thar situation. MQM Rabita Committee has appealed for help from United Nations and international NGOs for the residents of Thar. Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui said that the silence of Sindh government on Thar situation is nothing but insensitivity. He said that MQM will continue its relief activities.

Holding the press conference today (Monday) in Karachi, Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui said that keeping quiet on Sindh government’s insensitivity would be a national crime. He demanded special package for Thar from Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif.

Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui said that corruption and incompetence have pushed the residents of the desert to death. He said that MQM was not doing politics on Thar situation. “We have sent relief items worth more than Rs. 10 million for the people living in famine affected areas”, he said.

SINDH – Drought in Tharparkar: Another child dies as govt springs into action

KARACHI / ISLAMABAD / HYDERABAD: As Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif took serious notice of the appalling number of child deaths in Tharparkar, Sindh, one more infant died on Friday, taking the toll to 122 in three months.

The five-month-old Farzana, who was brought from Thar to Civil Hospital, Hyderabad, suffered from pneumonia and appeared malnourished, said Dr Akram Shaikh.

Meanwhile, Pakistan Army troops from Hyderabad Garrison left for the drought-affected areas on the directives of the prime minister. The contingents, carrying immediate relief goods and rations, are also taking lady doctors, paramedical staff and medicines with them.

Giant dam to devastate 200,000 tribal people in Ethiopia

A massive hydroelectric dam project on Ethiopia’s Omo River will devastate at least 200,000 tribal people, Survival said today. Survival is launching an urgent campaign calling on the Ethiopian government to halt the dam (known as Gibe III), and urging potential international funders, including the Africa Development Bank, the European Investment Bank, the World Bank and the Italian government not to support the project.

Droughts in Thar

Thar Desert is once again in grip of severe drought, food shortage, mortality and morbidity rate is high …..and there is no way for Thri souls except to migrate …..This is also not a solution but expose innocent Thari to unforeseen troubles …. .. Cold response of authorities concerned and politicians is there……. there is no effective policy to manage the said disaster, calamity  and suffering souls of Thar.
Thar isn’t mean Tharparkar Distt but parts falling in Umerkot Distt, Khipro Tehsil of Sanghar Distt and Nara of Khairpur Distt.

Rain brings smiles to Thar Desert people after three years of successive drought.

From the first week of July 09 heavy rains have been falling on the whole of Thar Desert in Sindh province of Pakistan. Soon after the rainfall people have started ploughing their land and sowing seeds of traditional crops of bajra (millet) and guwar (cluster beans) in all the four talukas of Thar.
