Karachi is burning

With hundreds already killed in ethnic, political and sectarian conflicts this year, the dynamics of violence in Karachi are becoming more complex

Of the 1,138 people killed in Karachi during the first half of 2011, 150 were political workers, according to the HRCP. This year, Sindh Home Ministry and Karachi Police report that 405 political workers have been targeted already. “More than 10,000 people have been killed in political and ethnic violence in the city since 2007,” says Aftab Rauf Khan, a senior security official. “What is worse is that there have been no prosecutions.”

Political and ethnic violence in Karachi has increased significantly since 2008. There were just over 200 target killings in the city in 2006, 318 in 2007, and 786 in 2008. At least 1,183 people died in political and ethnic violence in the city in 2009, more than 1,300 in 2010, and over 1,700 in 2011. ….

Imran Khan lays blame for Karachi violence on MQM

SINDH – KARACHI: In a press conference on Sunday, Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaaf Chairman Imran Khan lambasted Mutahidda Qaumi Movement (MQM) as “the pioneer of belligerence in Karachi politics by instituting a militant wing,”.

The PTI chairman added that, “the major responsibility of the present situation is on the MQM’s shoulders since the party was the forerunner in organizing and funding land and bhatta mafias. The rest of the political parties followed this trend later on.”

He was addressing a press conference at the Palwal House in DHA phase four which is home to the party’s vice present Najeeb Haroon. ….

KARACHI: Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) President Asma Jahangir on Tuesday said the recently released Joint Investigation Team (JIT) reports showed that the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) had machinery through which it carried out acts of violence in the city.

Speaking during today’s suo motu hearing on Karachi violence, she said the reports not only showed how they carried out the operations, but also how their cells were operating.

The SCBA president said that bhatta collection had been there before the MQM but had become more sophisticated when the party was founded.

She said the situation in the city was very complex and members of the judiciary themselves had experienced that during the May 12 incident.

Jahangir said families of the victims were looking towards the court for justice. ….
