We condemn threats to Asma Jahangir’s life by Pakistan army generals
Assassination plot against Asma Jahangir exposed
If there was only one person worthy of respect in Pakistan, it had to be Asma Jahangir. She must be protected from those afraid of her.
Not unlike millions of peace loving, progressive Pakistanis, LUBP editors and team members are concerned over threat to senior human rights activist Asma Jahangir’s life. In Kashif Abbas’s TV program today (Off the Record – ARY TV), Asma Jahangir detailed a plot by the military to assassinate her. Apparently, in view of Asma’s detailed revelations, Kashif took a break, but the show ended.
However, later on Geo TV’s Aapas Ki Baat, Asma did manage to speak to Najam Sethi about the plan by Pakistan army (ISI in particular) to assassinate her. In that show, she clearly stated that senior level army generals were planning to kill her.
Apparently, those with guns are afraid of an unarmed woman!
In Habib Jalib’s words: dartay hain bandooqan walay aik nihatti larki say (men with guns are afraid of an unarmed woman)
They want to eliminate her the way they killed Benazir Bhutto, Shahbaz Bhatti, Salmaan Taseer, Murtaza Bhutto, and thousands of other unnamed Balochs, Shias, Pashtuns and other citizens of Pakistan.
They want to kill Asma particularly because of her bold stance against Baloch genocide by Pakistan army and its various agencies and proxies. Apparently, Pakistan army chief and ISI chief are upset due to Asma’s recent speech at the Balochistan Conference in which she exposed and criticized army’s dirty role in extra judicial killings of the Baloch and Shia Muslims in Balochistan.
They also want to eliminate her because they want to rig the future elections and consider Asma as a major impediment to their plans.
According to Asma, Pakistan army generals are planning to kill her via their Jihadi-sectarian proxies (of Ahle Sunnat Wal Jamaat aka Sipah-e-Sahaba Pakistan, which is a sister organization of the Taliban and Al Qaeda).
The only way we can help Asma Jahangir is by raising awareness not only within but also outside Pakistan.
We must expose those who want to eliminate an independent, progressive voice from Pakistan, a true liberal who, unlike pseudo-liberals hiding in the Jinnah Institute and Jang Group etc, is not a toady of the military establishment.
May Asma’s bravery and integrity be an inspiration for all, particularly for those who claim to be progressive and liberal but in fact remain loyal to the pro-Taliban and pro-right-wing agendas and discourses of the Deep State.
Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) which otherwise remains notoriously silent on genocide of the Shias, Pashtuns etc by Pakistan army and proxies has finally broken its silence and expressed concern at info-leak of threat to Asma’s life.
According to Daily Times:
Different personalities belonging to various civil society organisations and bar associations have expressed serious concern and alarm at the information leak from a responsible and highly credible source that there was a serious threat to the life of the country’s leading human rights activist and one of the most influential leaders of the bar, Asma Jahangir.
The people who spoke out included Justice (r) Fakhruddin Ebrahim, Dr Mubashir Hassan, IA Rehman, SCBA President Yasin Azad, Pakistan Bar Council President Akhtar Hussain, Ali Ahmad Kurd, Tariq Mahmood, Muneer A Malik, Lt Gen (r) Talat Masood, Air Marshal (r) Zafar Chaudhry, senior journalist Ahmed Rashid, Peshawar High Court Bar President Latif Afridi, Lahore High Court Bar Association President Shahryam Sarwar Chaudhry, Balochistan High Court Bar Association President Zahoor Ahmad Shawani, Malakand High Court Bar Association President Sher Muhammad, Azam Nazir Tarar, Ehsan Bhoon, Justice (r) Malik Saeed Hassan, SM Masood, ANP General Secretary Ehsan Wyne, Prof Salima Hashmi, Hina Jilani, Munir Kakar, Jugnu Mohsin, Kamran Shafi, Kamran Arif, Rashed Rahman, Fareeda Shaheed, Samina Rehman, Dr Mehdi Hassan, Dr Haroon Ahmed, Saleem Asmi, Tahir Hassan, Neelam Hussain, Kishwar Naheed, Khawar Mumtaz, Nazish Ataullah, Shahtaj Qizilbash, Nasreen Azhar, Abbas Rashid, Nighat Saeed, Sajid Bashir, Shahzad Hassan Sheikh and Muhammad Tahseen.
They said, “What makes the reported conspiracy to liquidate Asma Jahangir especially serious is, firstly, the environment of target killings in which dissident persons’ dead bodies are being dumped all over, and, secondly, the fact that the finger of accusation has been pointed at the extraordinarily privileged state actors.” (Source)
