Bhasha Dam?

By Prof. Dr. Gul Agha

This is an unmitigated disaster for all. Although they are not likely to get credit at this stage, it is a bad decision which will make it easier for later regimes to do this. Mega-dams are unacceptable. The government is taking a harsh, anti-environmantal action. We must make it clear that we will not accept such an outrageous decisions selling out Indus river and Sindh rights. The Tarbela and Mangla to be dismantled so Indus can flow again.

  1. …our balochistan is a desert and you want to turn the whole country into one, people are facing food shortages world population is growing the demand for irrigation is growing …

  2. This notion that water is “wasted” by going to the sea is utter nonsense. Large dams are very destructive. Throughout the developed world, dams are being dismantled to protect the environment. The debate should be how fast to decommission and destroy Mangla and Tarbela, not build new dams.

“The once mighty Indus River has been the lifeblood of Sindh since time immemorial—in fact, much of the population still lives on the banks of the river. The river supplies water for agriculture and fisheries: its seasonal high flows fed Sindh’s forests and wetlands, and its flow to the sea watered the mangrove forests that protect the coast from flooding.

“Pakistan has built several mega-dams and barrages upstream that have impeded the flow of the Indus River and its tributaries to Sindh. As a consequence, the floodplains that fed Sindh’s forests are gone, resulting in massive deforestation: less than 20% of the original 600,000 acres of forest land is now being regenerated. Numerous species of plants and animals are endangered, including native and migratory birds such as pelicans and flamingos that rely on wetlands during their Spring migration to Sindh, and mammals such as the Indus River Dolphin, jackals, and boars.

“The Indus is one of the largest carriers of silt—replenishing Sindh’s agricultural soil in what is otherwise an arid desert. The amount of silt carried by the Indus has already been reduced from an average of about 1,000,000 tons a day before 1955 to 400,000 tons.

“Water no longer flows to the sea; as a consequence, the mangrove forests have experienced a 90% decline—from 2400 square kilometers to 200 square kilometers. Without protection from the mangrove forests, seawater has encroached—inundating 1.2 million acres of agricultural land and uprooting residents of 159 villages. The once plentiful seafood catch has been drastically reduced. The net result is that throughout Sindh, poverty levels, malnutrition and disease now match those in Sub-Saharan Africa.

  3. FOR 10 YEARS MUSHARRF KEPT THE NATIONAL LEADERS OUT OF PAKISTAN AND THE ENLIGHTENED WEST SUPPORTED HIM FOR THEIR OWN SELFISH USE. PRESENT SITUATION DOES NOT ALLOW US TO START FROM A ZERO POINT BUT A VERY MINUS SITUATION WITH MANY EVILS ADDED.
FRAGMANTED SOCIETY IS LEARNING THE HARD WAY. FOOD & POWER SHORTAGE IS NOW MAKING EVERY ONE REALIZE THE BLUNDERS AND WILL MAKE IT EASY FOR THOSE IN POWER TO SELL & BUILD KALABAGH DAM.

INDIA HAS SUCCESSFULLY BUILT DAMS AND IS FEEDING A HUGE POPULATION. CHINA CLOSED ITS EARS TO ENVIRONMENTALIST AND BUILT THE 5 GORGES DAM. ENVIRONMENTALIST SHOULD NOW PUBLISH STATISTICS TO PROVE THEIR POINT V/S THE BENIFITS AN ORDINARY CHINES HAS HAD.

PUNJAB IS 56% PAKISTAN AND WANTS KALABAGH AS A NATIONAL PROJECT THAT WILL BENEFIT SINDH MORE. NATIONAL DEBATE & A NATIONAL REFERENDUM WILL DECIDE FOR EVERY ONE.
IT IS A TEST FOR PPP TO MAKE HISTORY BEFORE IT GOES INTO OBLIVION ANYWAY. KALABAG DAM CAN ONLY GIVE LEASE OF LIFE TO THE PPP.

  4. It is very strange that educated people are also thinking such a way.

Do you know , where Bhasha is? Would you please let people know how water will wasted?

There is no canal or irrigation planned in this area (physically not possible.

In flood days, a lot of water is wasted to sea.

Such big dams are the only solution to store this water for our rivers to flow rest of the year.
We are suffering power shedding of 10-18 hours a day and you people are playing in hands of politicians we have.

I request you one thing, please just go through data of total land & cultivated land of both punjab and Sindh and water share Sind is getting. May real figure help to change such thought.

All engineering experts, who studied feasibility of Kala bagh dam, are agreed that this dam is not dangerous for any city.

You may observe that all those people speaking against these dams will never discuss technical values and figure of these dams. Hight of water level , hight of cities near by.

why don’t you people understand that apposing these dams are totally political moves of different parties. Those leaders are enjoying their lives with alternate power sources and investments around the world.

This is the poor Pakistani , who is living without power for 10-18 hours a days. Here is local small manufacturer who are suffering. Major multinational are not willing to invest in Pakistan, even some windup from Pakistan.
