2009 WEF Report on Gender Gap: Pakistani Women Trailing behind almost every Country in the World

By Khalid Hashmani

The World Economic Forum (WEF) recently issued the Global Gender Report 2009. This 205-page report was was authored by Saadia Zahidi(WEF) in collaboration with faculty members at Harvard University (Ricardo Hausmann), and University of California at Berkley (Laura D. Tyson). The essence of the Gender Gap Index is to measure the scope and magnitude of gender disparities that exist in various countries. The index takes into account economic, political, education, and health factors and assigns a score to each country. Among the 134 countries covered in the 2009 report, Pakistan stood third from the bottom at 132nd position. What is astonishing is that its position has steadily eroded since 2006. Pakistan’s 2009 score was 0.5458. Only two countries Chad and Yemen have lower scores. The top three countries were Iceland (0.8278), Finland ().8252), and Norway ().8227). Some of other countries and their rankings were Philippines (9th), UK (15th), Sri Lanka’s (16th), Canada (25th), US (31st), Kyrgyz Republic (41st), Bangladesh (93rd), Kuwait (105th), Nepal (110th), India (114th), Iran (128th), and Saudi Arabia at 130th. Indeed, this index shows that there are substantial disparities that Pakistani women suffer and this issue needs to be treated with urgent priority.
