We demand Onwership not royality of Oil and Gas Resources of Sindh

by Khalid Hashmani, McLean, Virginia

It is encouraging that various stakeholders in Sindh’s welfare have begun converging on strategies and broader goals that will alleviate poverty from Sindh. I understand that some members in the National/Federal  Assembly have moved a set of constitutional amendments in the Assembly to eliminate the concurrent list and restore provincial autonomy as envisioned in the 1940 Resolution.

Pakistan – India : Patron and Proxy

by: Omar Ali

I have been busy with other work, but from a distance it seems to me that:

1. Pakistan has accepted that there will be a NATO supported regime in Afghanistan for the foreseeable future, not a jihadi regime.

2. NATO has accepted that Pakistan will be given a “share” in this regime and as long as it fights the hardcore jihadis, will be accomodated in many ways. First and foremost, it will be allowed and even enouraged to present every U-turn as a great victory for the ISI. Secondly the army will not be forced to take too many orders from bloody civilians. Other goodies will probably flow. And India-specific jihadis will not be frontally attacked and no one will have to admit any mistakes or face any public humiliation.

3. Kiyani sahib, thanks to his sensible background (he is the son of a JCO) AND natural intelligence (IQ clearly 20-30 points higher than Musharraf, which means about 60 points higher than the average general) will probably keep his balance, but COAS is a position that is hazardous for mental health. who knows…..

4. The jihadis will not go quietly into the good night. Kiyani sahib probably knows that, but I have the feeling most people will be surprised at how long and hard they will fight.

5. Indian defence analysts (who are really no smarter than Shireen Mazari and company, just playing with a better hand that many of them dont even know they are holding…meaning they think they have a stronger hand because they have more tanks or more people, while in reality, the real superiority lies in being a SHADE better aligned with modern historical trends) will whine and kick and scream…. but Sundeep Dougal tells us that most Indians think less about Pakistan than Pakistanis imagine and THAT may be the thing that saves India. The ones paying attention to this game will frequently draw the wrong conclusions. But most of India will not pay attention and in this fit of absent-mindedness, may find themselves better off than they imagined possible…. Sardarji will make India a real power even though most power fanatics (my apologies to Brahma Chellaney) will think he is selling India cheap and letting Pakistan get away with murder and whatnot..

Solution of Kashmir Lies in a Peaceful & Negotiated Settlement: Dr. Fai

Washington, D.C. March 10, 2010. There are multiple ways by which the conflicts could be resolved. The most pragmatic being through dialogue and negotiations. The most prevalent perception about Conflict Resolution was that it was dependent upon the political process of negotiation, mediation, and other forms of non-violent dispute resolution. However, while this was a correct assumption, it is important for all of us to take note that firstly, the greatest hurdle is to get all parties involved in a conflict to come to the negotiating table. Secondly, the terms of reference should be formulated in such a manner so that they are seen to be fair and amicable to all stakeholders, said Dr. Ghulam Nabi Fai, Executive Director, Kashmiri American Council/Kashmir Center while speaking at the Institute for Conflict Analysis and Resolution, George Mason University, Arlington Campus.

Turkish (Sindhi) folk music

Turk people also came to Sindh and merged into Sindhi society afterwards, Turk surname in Sindh is the prominent example;) This is piece of Turkish music which you will find very similar to Sindhi folk music. I am almost sure that we inherited this music from Turks. Also if you look at the male dancers you will find that some of those style are still found in sindhie folk dance. – Munawar Ali

PPP awards 5 major districts of Sindh to MQM to keep Zardari president

SDF urges govt to make core committee decisions public

By Aziz Malik

Courtesy: daily dawn

SDF demanded that the PPP govt should respect the will and announcement of the party’s assassinated leader Benazir Bhutto to reverse the decision of bifurcation of Hyderabad and Karachi into its previous position of five districts.

HYDERABAD: Sindh Democratic Forum has expressed grave concern over the news of handing over five districts of Sindh, including Karachi, Hyderabad, Mirpurkhas, Nawabshah and Sukkur to Muttahida Qaumi Movement to decide the appointment of administrators and demanded that all the decisions taken by the core committee of PPP and MQM should be made public.

The Forum expressed surprise that under so-called reconciliation, the PPP government is giving undue advantage to MQM in those areas where even MQM has no political say and following. This non-political and non-democratic approach of PPP is against the wishes of the people of Sindh, who expect that the government would observe rules of the game to appoint administrators on merit basis to ensure the accountability of outgoing local governments and ensure free and fair elections on promised timeframe.

Sufi poet: Bhittai: the visionary

By Khurram Ali Shafique

Courtesy: dawn

Some people say that he fell in love, left home, became a phenomenon and came back to marry the woman who had been refused to him earlier. There is no way of knowing whether the career of Shah Abdul Latif Bhittai of Sindh actually paralleled the Count of Monte Cristo so closely (and we need to be careful about apocryphal stories woven around the lives of great saints), but there are other testimonials to the warmth of the heart that throbbed in him.

2009 WEF Report on Gender Gap: Pakistani Women Trailing behind almost every Country in the World

By Khalid Hashmani

The World Economic Forum (WEF) recently issued the Global Gender Report 2009. This 205-page report was was authored by Saadia Zahidi(WEF) in collaboration with faculty members at Harvard University (Ricardo Hausmann), and University of California at Berkley (Laura D. Tyson). The essence of the Gender Gap Index is to measure the scope and magnitude of gender disparities that exist in various countries. The index takes into account economic, political, education, and health factors and assigns a score to each country. Among the 134 countries covered in the 2009 report, Pakistan stood third from the bottom at 132nd position. What is astonishing is that its position has steadily eroded since 2006. Pakistan’s 2009 score was 0.5458. Only two countries Chad and Yemen have lower scores. The top three countries were Iceland (0.8278), Finland ().8252), and Norway ().8227). Some of other countries and their rankings were Philippines (9th), UK (15th), Sri Lanka’s (16th), Canada (25th), US (31st), Kyrgyz Republic (41st), Bangladesh (93rd), Kuwait (105th), Nepal (110th), India (114th), Iran (128th), and Saudi Arabia at 130th. Indeed, this index shows that there are substantial disparities that Pakistani women suffer and this issue needs to be treated with urgent priority. The full report can be accessed at http://www.weforum. org/pdf/genderga p/report2009. pdf.

Changes on both sides of Amu Darya

by Shiraz Paracha

Russia and some countries in the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) have successfully used changed realities of the post-Cold War world to their advantage. They have learnt quickly how to survive and stay relevant in a highly competitive world. A lesson that India and Pakistan both have yet to learn.

Sixty-three years after their independence, the two South Asian neighbours, did not find a peaceful way of coexistence. The military in Pakistan is India-centric at a time when it is daily bombed by violent jihadi groups. And India is trying to build bases in Afghanistan to encircle Pakistan.

THE REQUIREMENT OF NATIONAL SANITY

By Dr Ali Akbar Dhakan

On 2nd April 2010, we listened Geo TV channel Program entitled MERE MUTABIQ. The hosts were M/s Haroon Rashid Saheb, Irfan Saheb, Ansar Abbasi Saheb and Ayaz Amir. Dr Shahid Saheb showed his usual anger against the elected President of of Pakistan and the Co-Chair Person of the biggest Political Party i.e PPP which got majority in national and provincial general elections held in 2008. The President took oath being the Co-Chair person of the biggest political party i.e PPP. The general elections and the new setup of the present government got existence on account of the national reconciliation forgiving and forgetting the past omissions and commissions committed by all the political leaders and bureaucrats in the past. All concerned reconciled and brought in the derailed democratic system in the country after a very long time of 10-11 years. Thus derailed system of government was put on the right track of democracy in the country with a view that the sufferings of poor people of Pakistan can be mitigated but since the very inception of the present setup of government, the media particularly the one channel started a consistent struggle to topple down it on very past flimsy allegations for which Mr.Asif Ali Zardari and some of his partners suffered 11 years imprisonment and other administrative mishaps for about 11 years. Every body knows as to how Dr Shahid was vouchsafed as the MD PTV but he could not prove himself useful, productive and suitable for the post. As soon as the govt knew his unfair attitude and dealings in the PTV, the govt. kicked him and he became the staunch opponent of the PPP govt particularly of Mr.Asif Ali Zardari. The anchor and the hosts during the said discussion they condemned the president and all hosts of the said programme except Ayaz Amir the elected MNA of chakwal, stressed the establishment particularly, the military and other agencies to topple down Mr. Zardari and mid-term election may be announced but Mr. Ayaz Amir who showed his sagacity and sanity in admonishing anchor and other hosts of the program not to be insensible to pass any remark about the forcible or un-constitutional removal of the president of Pakistan Mr. Asif Ali Zardari but suggest and apply the constitutional methods and ways to remove him. He was again of sagacious views that no body should think of un-constitutional way of removal of Mr Zardari but in the eyes of the present constitution, he and the PPP government should be allowed to complete their tenure of five years and another setup of government and the President should be changed through the next general elections in the country so that the plant of democratic system should get firm roots otherwise same un-constitutional and dictatorial system will again devour the national integrity, solidarity and even sovereign status of the country. Mr.Ayaz Amir and the people of the level of his sanity deserve appreciations and the people of such national spirit may pray to almighty God to multiply the number of people possessing the spirit of national sagacity and sanity in our country Pakistan and improve all those who have vested interests and try to derail the system whatever we have got after a heavy toll of sacrifices.

Speech Of President of Pakistan Asif Zardari – Substance vs. Style

by Khalid Hashmani, McLean, Virginia

This is one of the rare times that I saw a video of Pakistan’s President Asif Zardari giving a public speech. I was kind of impressed with his style and delivery.

http://www.youtube. com/watch? v=97Ap6beRKxc& feature=related

In my view, his decision to give this speech in Punjabi, one of the national languages of Pakistan, was a quite shrewd. There was an aspect of humility and irony when he said that he learnt Punjabi in a Lahore jail and other jails in Punjab. I also liked his focus of on the poor of Pakistan – farmers, workers, and others from deprived areas. He rightfully pointed out that the importance Kashmir to Pakistan also lies in the fact that water that flows in Pakistani rivers originates in Kashmir. It makes a lot of sense to look at Kashmir and water as one issue. This may open up other possibilities of a negotiated settlement between Pakistan and India on the two issues.

One aspect of his speech that disappointed me greatly was his reference that he traveled to many foreign countries and has secured 700 millions in loans to build several dams in Pakistan. He talked about 5-6 dams that will create fertile lands (obviously implying that more water will be siphoned away in Punjab) around the new dams. He promised those newly created fertile lands to the poor people of the areas where the dams will be built. This statement amounted promising more share of water to Punjab when the lower riparian land throughout Sindh and particularly down stream from the Kotri barrage lies barren. Further, tmangrove forests in the delta area where the Indus River meets Arabian Seas are fast disappearing. In believe that PPP will not be able deliver on such promises as Sindhis are in no mood to loose even loose one drop of water being diverted from Sindh in the times when terrible poverty prevails in the rural areas of Sindh.

I hope PPP leadership will realize that giving more water to Punjab is far from being a balancing act but rather amounts to creating further distance between PPP and the people of Sindh.
