The real competition with India
WASHINGTON DIARY: The real competition with India

If Pakistani military/civilian leaders and the media should have reacted to any Indian statement, it should have been to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s announcement that his country’s economy will grow at nine to ten percent annually. Making noises against Indian army chief General Deepak Kapoor’s announcement of India’s military doctrine of fighting on two fronts simultaneously is futile. He was mimicking Pentagon-style statements for domestic consumption, specifically for those who believe that India has become a US-like global power and should act like it.
I was curious about how the Chinese leadership reacted to General Kapoor’s doctrine statement. No surprise, the Chinese did not take it as a threat or interpret it as the Indians’ intention to attack. The Chinese has always been working on such a multi-war doctrine because of possible wars with the Soviet Union, India and the US or its regional proxies (Taiwan and Japan). Therefore, for them, developing such doctrines may not be anything special, but General Kapoor’s statement may have been taken as unnecessary bragging for domestic consumption.

The same old song

There goes Amreeka Bahadur, once again doing exactly the wrong thing. As quoted in this newspaper of record Richard Holbrooke, the czar of American policy planning for Afghanistan and Pakistan (Afpak) who will soon be in Islamabad the Beautiful, has recently said: “Political instability is always a concern in any country … but if we are asked, and people think it will help, as in the past, we will (help).”
He then went and really put his foot in it: “We are watching (the situation) with sympathy and support for the elected government.”
While he did try and retrieve the situation by adding the word ‘support’ and by further saying: “… but we are friends of the Pakistani people and of the elected government”, he went and did it again: the United States, he said, also had good relations and respect for the Pakistani military which had taken actions in difficult conditions.
Diet may help to control Aids!
Why are some people with Aids (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome) actually HIV- negative? The old traditional wisdom tells that a healthy person easily resists foreign invaders, while a weak one is susceptible to almost every thing. Based on this philosophy a healthy diet is an important to control the Aids.
Fresh washed vegetables are rich in several vitamins, mineral and antioxidants. Raw vegetable and fruits are good source of enzymes. Vitamin C and E work together as a team to fight with free radicals to save us from a damage to our system. Aids patients need considerable amounts of vitamin C to build immunity to protect against the infection. Vitamin C stimulates white cell activity and helps the cells to surround viruses, different studies supports vitamin Cs ability to inhibit the replication of HIV and other pathogenic microorganisms. This may help: Taking 1 gram (1000 mg) vitamin C five times a day everyday may helps not to spread Aids quickly. The human friendly bacteria which found in yogurt help rebuild the micro flora in the intestine that have been weakened by repeated antibiotic. Therefore, yogurt has immune- boosting effects. Garlic has great antiviral properties; it works as a natural antibiotic, antiviral and anti-fungal. It has proven effectiveness again viruses such as herpes I, II, and shingles because of its ability to suppress human cytomegalovirus in vitro it may work against HIV virus. Garlic helps to protect from free radical damage and it eliminate toxins from the system. Garlic is contains allicin. Allicin compound is an antibacterial and antiviral agent. Vitamin B complex daily is important for building up red blood cells and activating natural killer cells. Vitamin E is a powerful antioxidant to help increase the cell’s antiviral capabilities. Magnesium and Zinc are trace minerals. Several studies show that the supplement of 10 mg of Magnesium and 05 mg of Zinc improves immune function of the body. And the juice of greens or fresh vegetables such as Carrots, beets, garlic, ginger, lemons, and bitter melon is a good and may help to reduce spreading Aids. Try not to consume sugar and sugar products, Cake and cookie products, and white flour products because it literally feed the virus to grow quickly. Eat deep water fish. Drink 8 to 12 glasses of crystal clean fresh water.
Karachi, Sindh: People of Lyari Protesting Againt government
An apologist and fearful PPP

An apologist, fearful, and hapless PPP
1. PPP appears to be unsure about its future. Their actions reflect uncertainties and the actions of its leaders tend to focus on short term personal gains rather than securing strategic and long-term gains for their constituents as opposed to MQM that is constantly striving to please its community. PPP spends more time in apologizing to other parties (PML-N or MQM) instead of thinking about how to make their rule more effective to serve their constituencies and Pakistan.

A transparent process for appointing VCs is needed to gain international respect
by: Khalid Hashmani, McLean, Virginia
The sudden replacement of Vice Chancellor of University of Sindh and the harsh statement by a Sindhi Civil Society organization called Sindh Democratic Front (SDF) raises serious issue of transparency in this decision. The University of Sindh is a premier educational institution of Sindh with seven faculties and 46 departments. The selection of the top leader of this important institution and for that matter of any university requires a transparent and open process. A selection made through a proper and transparent process would earn support of academicians and other organs of civil society and as well international universities.

Poor Conditions Of Roads In Sindh
During my visit to rural Sindh from Karachi after a long time, I found very dangerous condition of link roads even of main roads from Sehwan to Ratodero and Naudero. The single roads already constructed about 30-40 years ago were left without shoulders at the both sides of all roads. They have been so much in derogatory, dilapidated and dangerous conditions for vehicle plying on single main roads looking like big holes and pits dug at both sides of them and the running of vehicles have met with terrible accidents many times which became the cause of loosing thousands lives from time to time. It seems the road authorities do not care and look after all the roads but wait for loss of lives due to recurring accidents and wait for their earning from contracts of construction of whole roads and they do not feel their duties to maintain the roads when at various places, they get holes and pits on them. When the roads become out of use and running on them become difficult, they prepare estimates of contracts of the whole roads and start digging and scratching them. In this way they start process of constructing new roads and take about half a century to get it completed and make it worth for running of vehicles. As a first phase, a large distance of about 30-40 Kms is dug, and dust is poured in them to make it at high side and put stones and keep it stony for many years with the result of losses of lives and vehicles as their tyres burst out and the vehicles become unable to run on such roads which are under repairs or construction. The best example we found from Dadu, Mehar, Nasirabad, Wagan, Khairpur juso up to the Larkana city. At the other side, we faced such miserable difficulty at the under construction road from Nasirabad to Badah-Moenjo Daro upto the Larkana City. How the people of the above areas live and pass their lives as they face such difficulties daily. Even in the city of Larkana at many places all internal roads and streets were full of water and holes and illegal breakers constructed by local authorities of the city showing the best proof of the neglected and apathetic attitude towards the welfare and health of the people living in the city. If some where work on repairs was started but it was run on the whims of the authorities without any checks and speed. The next experience of roads we saw when we visited Thatta, sujawal to Tando Muhammad Khan Road and later on from Thatta to pir pitho. It is shameful on the part of the local Govt authorities to neglect and ignore such dangerous roads, link as well as main roads throughout the whole Sindh Province. We saw that those roads were constructed during the first regime of PPP Chairman Shaheed Zulfiqar Bhutto but remained unrepairable and reconstructed since about 40 years. Are the authorities concerned treating the people of these areas as animals and belonging to inhuman generations. For God’s sake, the PPP regime should take these tasks and save the people of all the areas in interior Sindh from tragic accidents and loss of precious lives and vehicles as well and financial loss. The latest example of accident is of a very young MPA of Sindh Minister Mr. Jalil Memon of Thatta and his brothers while going from the Thatta to Pir Pitho through a very dangerous single road having no shoulders and borders at both sides constructed 30-40 years ago. It is therefore suggested to the chief secretary and CM Sindh to get all the old roads reconstructed with necessary shoulders or borders at the both sides of all single roads. This will save many lives and financial loss of the people of Sindh and Pakistan.

Sindhi Civil Society’s demands from the PPP
by Khalid Hashmani, McLean, Virginia, USA
More Criticism of PPP from Sindhi Civil Society
More and more Sindhi Civil Society groups and individuals are expressing their dissatisfaction with present government and its unwillingness or inability to bring the promised relief to Sindhis. PPP may may be under delusion that their Sindhi constituents will forget and forgive the continued saga of injustices. However, the indications are that Sindhis are re-evaluating their trust in PPP and Pakistan for fairness and justice. It appears that they will elect new leaders and vote for new political parties unless PPP starts listening to their Sindhi constituents. I have extracted few key demands/grievances that were included in a set of 34 points in an e-mail issued in the name of Civil Society.

Rockets fired in India-Pakistan border skirmish
Courtesy: CNN
New DELHI, India (CNN) — Indian border guards fired four rockets into Pakistan on Saturday in what they said was retaliation to a similar fire from the other side. Pakistan denied that claim.
Two unexploded rockets were traced after midnight near an Indian outpost along the border dividing the Punjab region between the two countries, said K. Srinivasan, a deputy inspector-general of India’s Border Security Force.
“We have standing instructions to retaliate and retaliate heavily,” he said, adding that Indian borders guards also fired about 50 gunshots. The firing has stopped as of now, he said.
But a spokesman for the Pakistan Rangers said India’s allegations were false. Nadeem Raza said that an explosion was heard at about 11:30 p.m., after which Indians fired mortars into Pakistani territory.
Insights about the future developments in Pakistan
by: Tausif Kamal
Interesting and divergent insights about the future developments in Pakistan by Dr. Manzur and Kamran Shafi Saheb : one concluding that the military will continue with its Jihadi nexus unabated while the other forecasting the the military will have no choice but to completely eliminate every Jihadist/ Taliban groups in the country. Though I’ve high regard for their thoughtful analysis of the Pakistan milieu and their underlying love of the country, it seems to me that both these conclusions are apparently based upon not-so-accurate assumptions of military.
Dr Manzur seems to argue that once the military realizes that its own privileges, and the state of Pakistan are threatened and the country is stalked by lawlessness and a collapsing economy, the military ” will have no choice but to eliminate all Jihadi groups one by one. ” Kamran Shafi Saheb , on the other hand, says that ” It will be far too late by the time the brass hats of the Army realise that ALL Jihadi groups are bad Jihadis’ and take action against them.” I think both these opinions mistakenly assign too omniscient and omnipresent a role to the military. The Army is not the sole arbiter of Pakistan’s destiny ; the entire future of our country doesn’t lie only in its hands.
First of all, it’s a no-brainer to even a man on the street to realize that the country’s economy is near collapse (just look at the desperately impoverished condition of the people and country at large, galloping prices and inflation etc), prevalence of a state of utter lawlessness ( daily massacres of civilians and destruction of people’s property by Jihadist’s suicide bombings and attacks with complete impunity ) and the presence of a lethal and palpable danger to country’s existence and continuance in its current political and geographical shape ( large swaths of Pakistan’s own territory in Jihadists/ Taliban control). I’m sure the military , no matter how ‘futile’ it is as Kamran Saheb correctly points out, do indeed realizes these doomsday threats to the country , which are directly caused by the Jihadists/ Talibans.
Secondly, its assumed that the military will be able to” eliminate all Jihadi groups one by one” once it realizes that the doomsday conditions do exist in the country. Well as stated above such conditions do actually exist and the question arises that why isn’t the military trying to eliminate all Jihadi groups ? Perhaps, the short answer is that may be it can’t. May be the military is not up to the task of fighting and eliminating all the Jidadi groups. In my opinion our military is not geared up for it : it doesn’t have the ability and will , for whatever reasons, to decisively take on the Jihadi groups which are embedded not only in FATA and NWFP but also in every urban areas of the country.
So what is the final outcome, the endgame for our country? Most likely, the country will muddle through its existence like a sputtering vehicle with the assistance of a military and economic push by the U.S. now and then. Of course, there will be occasional fits of chest-thumping by the military in a show of hollow arrogance . However, the risk of the country coming to an abrupt standstill and violent implosion would always persist. It would be futile and in vain to wait for the military to mitigate or eliminate this mortal risk. In my view, only a people’s movement enmasse, along the lines of civilians’ struggle for restoration of the judiciary but only about twenty times larger and armed, would be able to thwart the Jihadist onslaught against Pakistanis and Pakistan.

In late August, a couple of weeks after a U.S. drone strike incinerated Baitullah Mehsud, leader of the Pakistani Taliban, the country’s most popular televised chat show, “Capital Talk,” hosted a panel to discuss national security. Among the guests was a squat, middle-aged woman with short black hair, streaked with silver dye, named Shireen Mazari. A defense analyst and public intellectual, Mazari is known for her hawkish nationalism–and deep suspicions of India and the United States. Her presence in the studio suggested that, despite the enormous threat her country faced from homegrown terrorists, the conversation that night wouldn’t center around Mehsud or the Pakistani Taliban.
Will you be able to cope Swine flu?
What is H1N1? H1N1 once referred to as “Swine flu,” is a new influenza virus first detected in people in the U.S. or Mexico in April 2009. It is now spreading person-to-person worldwide, in much the same way that regular seasonal influenza spreads.
Many people have at least partial immunity to seasonal flu viruses through previous infections or vaccinations but viruses genetically change over time. But the new H1N1 virus is not the usual virus of H1N1. It come to humans from a different evolutionary line. That means very few people have any natural immunity to the new H1n1.
HOW DO YOU KNOW IT IS COLD OR FLU? Doctors recommend taking your temperature as a first step. Symptoms such as nasal congestion, cough, aches and malaise are a part of colds, seasonal flu and H1N1 flu. But a common cold rarely has symptoms of fever above 101F. The severity of H1N1 cases in the current outbreak has varied widely from mild cases to fatalities. The vast majority of cases have been mild. But many of the complicated cases have appeared in young people aged 5 to 24. Women and particularly pregnant women have also been vulnerable to swine flu.
This may help: Wash your hands regularly with soap and water, especially after coughing or sneezing. Avoid close contact with people who have flu-like symptoms. Avoid touching your mouth, nose or eyes. If you have flu-like symptoms stay home until you have been symptom-free and take fresh air breath. Breastfeeding mothers with flu symptoms should feed their child by other means. Take lot of orange/lemon juice or vitamin C. Avoid exercise during flu symptoms. Take tea without sugar and milk. Brush teeth three times daily and rinse your mouth by antiseptic gargles.

Striking Suicide Bombers!
Found, I am not sure where, by Gweilicus
Courtesy: fmft.net
.. suicide bombers in Britain are set to begin a three-day strike on Monday in a dispute over the number of virgins they are entitled to in the afterlife. Emergency talks with Al Qaeda management have so far failed to produce an agreement. The unrest began last Tuesday when Al Qaeda announced that the number of virgins a suicide bomber would receive after his death will be cut by 25% next January from 72 to only 60. The rationale for the cut was the increase in recent years of the number of suicide bombings and a subsequent shortage of virgins in the afterlife.
The suicide bombers’ union, the British Organisation of Occupational Martyrs (or B.O.O.M.) responded with a statement that this was unacceptable to its members and immediately balloted for strike action. General Secretary Abdullah Amir told the press, “Our members are literally working themselves to death in the cause of Jihad. We don’t ask for much in return but to be treated like this by management is a kick in the teeth.”
Mr Amir accepted the limited availability of virgins but pointed out that the cutbacks were expected to be borne entirely by the workforce and not by management. “Last Christmas Abu Hamza alone was awarded an annual bonus of 250,000 virgins,” complains Amir. “And you can be sure they’ll all be pretty ones too. How can Al Qaeda afford that for members of the management but not 72 for the people who do the real work?”

Pakistan: End of the military-jihadi nexus

The military has no choice but to eliminate all types of non-state armed groups in Pakistan to save the state and its own privileges. The military may want to pick and choose among these groups, but circumstances will force it to take them out one by one
Asia Peace, a discussion forum, opened the New Year with making predictions about the possible scenarios in Pakistan. Ultimately, the debate centred on the prospects for the military-jihadi nexus. An overwhelming majority believes that the military will keep its jihadi option intact by differentiating between good and bad Taliban and other extremist groups. A very tiny minority, including myself, optimistically believes that the military has no choice but to take out all kinds of jihadis. The military may wish otherwise and may not be fully cognizant of its limited choices but circumstances will force it to clean up the mess it created.

BANGLADESH BANS RELIGION IN POLITICS PAKISTAN SHOULD FOLLOW IT TO SAVE THE COUNTRY FROM THE MISUSE & ABUSE OF RELIGION
Bangladesh bans religion in politics

DHAKA: All the Islamic political parties of Bangladesh should drop the name of Islam from their name and should stop using religion during campaigning, Law Minister Ahmad Shafique said on Monday. He said this following a Supreme Court ruling on Sunday, which upheld a 2005 ruling by the high court throwing out the fifth amendment of the constitution, which had allowed religion-based politics to flourish in the country since the late 1970s. “All politics based on religion are going to be banned as per the original constitution,” Ahmed said. The move follows the Awami League’s sweep to power in 2008 elections, which saw them beat the BNP with a landslide. The new government outlawed a controversial Islamic party in October, accusing it of destabilising the country. “We want to reinstate the original constitution. Secularism was a pillar of the 1972 constitution,” said Ahmed. The main opposition party, Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), which is allied with two other Islamic parties, said it would appeal the verdict. Four other Islamist organisations, including the Jamaatul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB), were banned after they carried out a series of nationwide bombings that left 28 people dead in 2005. afp
